ArtsUnion Winter Sculpture Series 2010 Exhibit Opening: Saturday, February 6, 2010 @ 90 Union Square Five artists, who work in the fields of architecture, ceramics and sculpture, have created site-specific installations for Union Square’s urban landscape. The unifying theme of this work is recycling and growth. Look for sprouting mushrooms, recycled topiary Christmas trees and a plant emerging from the back of a solitary human figure. Collectively, we hope these installations will encourage passersby to consider Union as a dynamic, green-friendly urban landscape. The work will remain up for winter and early spring. The Caterpillar’s Garden Marisa Dipaola’s sculptures suggest children’s storybooks coming to life. For this exhibit, she has created The Caterpillar’s Garden, a grouping of brilliantly glowing mushrooms, evoking the caterpillar’s habitat from Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. The mushrooms are oversized so people can experience the garden from a caterpillar’s perspective. The exhibit is made using foraged plastic bags lit up with LED lights, in an effort to clean up this world-and illuminate the wonders of the natural world. (via www.somervilleartscouncil.org
My wife really looks forward to Valentine’s Day because it gives her the opportunity to celebrate life with an open heart…and she does it in a most festive way that brings out the heart of the child and the warm and loving feelings we all have, sometimes buried too deep within us. In her outside decorations, you’ll discover how she uses the native palm trees and driftwood to display the hot pinks and reds of the holiday, while in her inside decorations, every available space seems to find a comfortable place to say “Love is here to stay.”
These are daytime and night-time videos of my wife’s, Rita’s, that we made for Christmas, 2011. The village has 28 house, 3 churches, a railroad, and numerous accessories. This all began 35 years ago with a 5 house plastic Alpine village that progressed to a small ceramic village. Gifts and purchases of larger houses over the years ended up with what is shown here built on a 4 ft x 8 ft table with 1 inch foamboard for pinning down accessories. A queen size bedsheet provides a white base for the village and for the plastic “snow”. We hope that you enjoy watching this.
